Vitamin D supports the immune system via the gut

An important part of vitamin D's importance for the immune system takes place in our intestinal system, a new study has shown.

Vitamin D helps to regulate a wide range of body functions, such as the immune system. As something completely new, Danish researchers from Aalborg University in collaboration with British and American colleagues have demonstrated in an experiment with 1.5 million participants that vitamin D affects the bacterial composition of the intestine, which helps to support the body's immune system. Since 70-80 percent of the immune cells are found in the intestine, it does not come as a big surprise that vitamin D is involved in the biochemistry of the intestine. People have simply not been aware of this connection in the past.

Vitamin D receptors in all tissues

The study, published in the scientific journal Science, follows a growing body of research showing that we need vitamin D to maintain a normal immune system.

In the past, it was only believed that the vitamin was important for the condition of the bones, but we have so-called vitamin D receptors in almost all tissues of the body, which indicates that the substance helps to maintain functions in many different places in the body.

1.5 million Danes participated in the experiment

The new research is divided into two phases. The first phase consists of experiments with mice, where it was looked at how vitamin D affected the mice's immune system via mechanisms in the gut. There was a clear and significant correlation.

In the second part of the research, the researchers made similar comparisons on humans. Here they started from register data on 1.5 million Danes, and here they could see a similar correlation.
Denmark is one of the few countries that has such well-organized and comprehensive health data on the population that allows this type of comparison. Based on this, the researchers conclude that the results of the mouse experiments can be applied to humans.

    D-Pearls are used by researchers

A lot of research is being done into the importance of vitamin D for human health. One of the most thoroughly researched vitamin D preparations is D-Pearls from Pharma Nord. The preparation contains biologically active vitamin D3 in organic olive oil to ensure good absorbability, which is precisely necessary for the vitamin to be absorbed into the blood and thus can be used for high-quality scientific studies.

    Documented admissibility

D-Pearls have, among other things, been tested by Norwegian researchers from the University of Oslo in a study where they looked at the muscle function of a group of top-trained athletes. There has also been a study of D-Pearls and immune defense, which researchers from Queen Mary University in London were behind. And in a third study, Norwegian researchers compared school children's vitamin D status with their ability to solve mentally demanding tasks. In this study, D-Pearls were also used as an experimental preparation. A similar American study was conducted on adults in the United States.

All the studies have been published and document that D-Pearls in the doses used have good absorption in the blood.
