It is important or our brain function that we get enough Vitamin C, according to the Danish scientific journal "Aktuel Naturvidenskab”. Read more about Vitamin C and the brain and find out why the vitamin plays such a crucial role in, for example, your mood and your ability to remember and orientate yourself.

Did you know that Vitamin C is important for your ability to think and feel? It helps the brain perform its psychological functions, which includes things like will, emotion, imagination and logical thinking. In the journal “Aktuel Naturvidenskab” (No. 4, 2016), you can read in the article "Vitamins and Brains" about how Vitamin C supports the brain in several different areas.

Scurvy and mood swings

Researchers already know that some of the earliest symptoms of pronounced deficiency of vitamin C (beginning scurvy) are fatigue, mood swings and depression, which are precisely related to the brain and its function. Vitamin C, however, also has an impact on the ability to orientate oneself and remember (see box about guinea pig experiments).

Collagen to blood vessels
Vitamin C has several tasks in the brain. The substance is necessary for the body to produce collagen, which is the main constituent of connective tissue in, among other things, the brain's blood vessels. In addition, Vitamin C is an important antioxidant that protects against free radicals that can destroy cells, including brain cells.

How to get Vitamin C

A healthy and varied diet with good vitamin C sources like fruits and vegetables is a good way to cover the body's needs for this important vitamin. You may be able to supplement your diet with a supplement, and Pharma Nord's Bio-C Vitamin is a good help, as it is for the prevention and treatment of vitamin C deficiency. Each tablet contains 750 mg of acid-neutral vitamin C (calcium ascorbate), which is particularly mild to the stomach. Bio-C Vitamin can also be used even if you are pregnant and breastfeeding.

This is how vitamin C supports your brain function

Vitamin C has a number of important tasks in the body, which amongst others, are important for the brain to function as it should.

  • Contributes to the normal formation of collagen, which is included in connective tissue (bones, teeth, blood vessels, etc.). Vitamin C is thus included in the formation of new blood vessels in the brain
  • Reduces fatigue
  • Works as an antioxidant that protects cells (including brain cells) from oxidative stress caused by free radicals

Exciting trials With guinea pigs

Danish researchers have conducted experiments with young guinea pigs that have been exposed to vitamin C deficiency for a total of two months. In humans, it corresponds to the period from child to teen. The researchers observed that, due to vitamin deficiency, the animals had reduced ability to remember and to orient themselves in a maze.

Depending on vitamin C from the diet
People and guinea pigs are not similar to each other. Nevertheless, they have one thing in common: none of them can form vitamin C. Virtually all mammals can produce vitamin C in the body, but a few species (including humans and guinea pigs) need to get the vitamin from their diet. For this reason, the results of research into vitamin C deficiency in guinea pigs can be transmitted to humans. Another thing is that guinea pigs are already very developed at birth. Therefore, the effect of vitamin C deficiency on the guinea pigs brain during pregnancy can be readily studied in this animal species.
